Who doesn’t know Sitira? Most of us have grown up with the folk song about her seductive presence on the bamboo dam. I remember singing this song with my friends as a child, blissfully unaware of the suggestive nature of the words. It wasn’t until much later that it became clear. But I feel that we should give de poor gyurl a chance. She has done us a great service, entertaining so many generations of Guyanese.
